The Big Daddy of films?
ATMOSPHERIC first-person-shooter Bioshock is the latest video game to be given the Hollywood treatment.
This week 2K Games announced that its critically-acclaimed survival shooter would be transformed into a film directed by Gore Verbinski, of Pirates of the Caribbean fame.
Universal Pictures has acquired the license to shoot the film and it is planned for a release in 2009.
Tipped to join Verbinski will be John Logan, Academy Award-nominated writer of Gladiator, The Aviator and Sweeney Todd, who is in negotiations with Universal to write the screenplay for Bioshock.
A critical and consumer hit, Bioshock has sold more than 2 million units worldwide since its release in August 2007.
A sequel to the game, Bioshock 2, is planned for a release in 2009.
Shaun says:
Given how atmospheric the game was to play, and how it challenged gamers' morals with a series of live-or-die choices, I'll be keen to see how well a film can translate this feeling.
Bioshock, to gamers, feels spooky, surreal and yet engrossing. Fingers crossed the film does not disappoint.
