Breath of Fire II (Review)

Players: 1
Genre: RPG
Developer: Capcom
Platform: SNES
Year: 1995 (USA), 1996 (PAL)
I played Breath of Fire 2 soon after completing Secret of Mana, Seiken Densetsu 2 and Chrono Trigger. Because of this I may not have appreciated it as much as I would have if I hadn't. I enjoyed the game, but not as much as other ones. It was just missing... something.
Story: Breath of Fire 2's story takes place chronologically after the first Breath of Fire, with the protagonist being a fledgling ranger named Ryu. After being given a simple task upon joining the ranger's guild, Ryu and his friend Bow become involved in something more complicated... which unsurprisingly spirals into a journey of grand scales to protect the world.
Battle System: Rather standard turn-based RPG fare. You can have up to 4 characters per battle, and each has a unique skill such as a chance of instantly killing an enemy or a taunt skill to draw enemies' attention. There isn't much variation as you travel through the game, so battles can turn out to be more tedious than normal.
Innovation: During the course of the game you can build your own township. Quite an interesting chance from just visiting towns and villages.
Graphics: Average, but nothing special.
Sound: A bit bland, but nothing overtly annoying.
Replayability: Very low, though there are multiple endings for the game.
Overall: If you like RPGs, you'll find something in this game. If you don't like RPGs, there's nothing to convince you otherwise.
Score: 6/10
