Good Morning Gamers,
Well its Friday and its time for this week's post of Clash of the Titans. In the late 80's and early 90's the battle between Nintendo and Sega was in full swing. Both companies had home consoles in just about everyone's house. Gaming history was about to soon change, what if you could take your video games with you? Well Nintendo was about to release a system that would let you play your games on the run.
At this point in the video game industry, you had two ways to play video games. You could play them at home on your home console or at the Arcade with your friends. So Nintendo said what if you could have your games where ever you go thus the Nintendo Game Boy was born. On July 31st 1989 the Game Boy was released and took the world by storm. It was Nintendo's first shot at handheld gaming and in the first weeks of its release it sold over a million units.
So how would Sega respond? well they did in a big way. Sega took handheld gaming to the next level. The Sega Game Gear was born, in 1991 the Game Gear was released and the battle began. The Game Gear was a smaller version of the Sega Master System. It had a lower resolution screen and was easy enough to play your Master System games on it. Now on big difference between the Game Boy and Game Gear was the screen. The Game Boy had a green Dot Matrix style which made it harder to play at night. The Game Gear had a bright color screen which made it great to play at night.
These two gaming consoles battled for years but the war came to an end in 1997 when Sega no longer supported the Game Gear. The system eventually faded away while the Game Boy evolved into the Nintendo DS. The DS was dominant in handheld till Sony created the PSP, let the Clash of the Titans continue.....
