Echochrome Review - PSP and PS3
July 28th 2008 06:08
Echochrome
PSP, Playstation 3
$59.95
ECHOCHROME is the first puzzle game since Tetris to send shivers of addiction down my spine.
Remember that moment when you cleared your first line of oddly-shaped blocked, and were rewarded with more space and a deep sense of satisfaction?
If you do, you'lll love Echochrome.
Sony's new puzzler requires players to manipulate a maze of paths, ensuring a walking stick figure can safely walk and reach a number of check points. You control perspective, and rotate your view of the paths to ensure the man can safely cross holes, jump onto ledges above and walk past obstructions.
There are five perspective laws which govern the game; travelling, landing, existence, absence and jumping. For example, if a path appears to be complete, it is. Or if one pathway appears to be above another, it is.
The game engine is complex, but the on-screen interface is masterfully simple, and enjoyable.
If you enjoy the luxury of owning a PS3 and a PSP, grab this title on the handheld.
Echochrome is a genuine pick up and puzzle game, perfect for in the car or on the train.
The PS3 version is identical, but lacks the portability that made Tetris one of the best puzzlers of all time, and Echochrome is definitely on par.

As good as Tetris?

I'd say it's as good as Tetris but it requires more thinking than just putting blocks together to clear lines.

Not too sure about the PSP version lacking levels, I'd imagine if you could download levels to the PS3, you could do the same with the PSP.
The PSN offers downloadable content to PSP, but I can't say I've tried it with Echo.
Maybe you could let us know?

Both games have the same number of stages (56) but the PSP's stages are completely different from the PS3's. As for the downloadable content, you can download user-submitted stages from around the world on the PS3 version while the PSP only supports Ad-Hoc DLC (you can only trade stages with friends who have a PSP with Echochrome). I got this from IGN's reviews of the game (HERE and HERE).
So I was partly right.
I guess the best thing would be to buy both versions.

Thanks for the details. You were spot on about the differences between the two. It's an interesting approach from Sony... I reckon you're also correct with your last sentence.
Perhaps they created a point of difference to encourage users to buy up! Trading stages between PSP sounds fun!
Cheers,
Glen.

I've also got my eye on Elefunk. IGN gave it an average review given it was hard, so that probably means it was a great game they didn't have the patience to learn! I'm sold! Haha
