Mystic Quest was designed as a simple RPG for the entry-level gamer. I discovered this game in a second hand store and decided to give it a whiz.
Story: The simplicity extends to a simple plot involving disaster and a quest to save the world, accompanied by new companions.
Battle System: A very basic turn-based system with the standard attacks and magic. Your party can consist of up to two characters, who each perform an action per turn.
Innovation: It's worth noting that the enemies in Mystic Quest change their appearance based on how much HP they have remaining. Although it's a minor innovation, it's still a rare thing to see a visual representation of damage in today's RPGs.
Graphics: Pretty average and quite blocky.
Sound: Nothing much that's remarkable.
Replayability: None. It's a very linear game.
To be blunt, this game offers no challenge whatsoever. As long as you fight all the enemies you encounter while completing tasks (there are no random encounters), you will have no troubles with standard battles nor boss battles.
It's not to say that the game wasn't enjoyable at all, but Mystic Quest offers no replay value. Once you've been through it once, you've seen it all. The game also lasts approximately 10 hours. Perhaps 13 if you stroll leisurely through it as I did.
Mystic Quest is a great game for the RPG beginner, but offers very little to anyone who has played any other RPGs at all.
Score: 6/10
