Race Driver: Grid vs Gran Turismo 5

It's all about the race

Race Driver Grid preview
Race Driver: Grid is genuine GT5 competition

WATCH out Polyphony and get ready Xbox 360 owners, a Gran Turismo killer is lurking just around the next bend.

With GT5 Prologue already available, and Race Driver Grid scheduled for release in June, the race for the title of supreme console simulator looks certain to go down to the last lap.

I'm a devoted Gran Turismo lover. But my first impressions of Race Driver Grid have rocked me to the core. It's fast, furious and action packed, and it's headed for PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Nintendo DS.

Race Driver Grid vs Gran Turismo
Race Driver Grid is fast, furious and addictive

Codemasters has combined revolutionary speed and handling with amazing track design and the best muscle cars in the world.

Forget going for your A, B, B , B- and C licenses in 1986 Ford Falcons, Race Driver puts you behind the wheel of Aston Martins and Pagani Zondas. The best of the best.

I have wasted countless hours flying around the San Francisco time trial track, going sideways into hairpin corners at 140 km/h and somehow escaping out the other side.

I've also destroyed too many cars to recall, and loved every moment of the instant replay and flashback features, which gives drivers a number of 'lives' and allows them to rewind time and get back on the track.

The damage engine is a treasure. It's both superb and spot-on. I've always defended Gran Turismo's lack of a damage system. But after playing Race Driver: Grid, it has made Polyphony seem simply lazy.

No longer can you side swipe cars going into corners, and you can't just plough into the behinds of cars queuing up to get through a slow corner. Race Driver rewards accurate driving.

GT5 Prologue is promising, it's no doubt going to be a feat of presentation and handling, but after spending a few days with Race Driver: Grid, the war is not yet won.

Nice write up Glen. I downloaded the demo on the weekend and played it most of sunday arvo. Judging by the demo this game is set to achieve great things! The cars feel realistic and powerful. Visually I would compare it to last years racer Forza Motorsport 2 but GRID sets the bar 1 level higher. Sound affects including everything from tires screeching, windows smashing, blow off valves to the grinding of gears are excellent, The sound track so far has been quite solid. It pumps you up while your racing. I enjoyed playing on xbox live and given my experience I'll definitely be spending much more time there. The best feature has to be like Glen said, the ability to slow the game down and view in-game replays at any time and rewinding the clock back to before you totalled your $200,000 plus ride and doing things differently.

Can't wait for this game to be released!

Ben
