It's all about the race
WATCH out Polyphony and get ready Xbox 360 owners, a Gran Turismo killer is lurking just around the next bend.
With GT5 Prologue already available, and Race Driver Grid scheduled for release in June, the race for the title of supreme console simulator looks certain to go down to the last lap.
I'm a devoted Gran Turismo lover. But my first impressions of Race Driver Grid have rocked me to the core. It's fast, furious and action packed, and it's headed for PS3, Xbox 360, PC and Nintendo DS.
Codemasters has combined revolutionary speed and handling with amazing track design and the best muscle cars in the world.
Forget going for your A, B, B , B- and C licenses in 1986 Ford Falcons, Race Driver puts you behind the wheel of Aston Martins and Pagani Zondas. The best of the best.
I have wasted countless hours flying around the San Francisco time trial track, going sideways into hairpin corners at 140 km/h and somehow escaping out the other side.
I've also destroyed too many cars to recall, and loved every moment of the instant replay and flashback features, which gives drivers a number of 'lives' and allows them to rewind time and get back on the track.
The damage engine is a treasure. It's both superb and spot-on. I've always defended Gran Turismo's lack of a damage system. But after playing Race Driver: Grid, it has made Polyphony seem simply lazy.
No longer can you side swipe cars going into corners, and you can't just plough into the behinds of cars queuing up to get through a slow corner. Race Driver rewards accurate driving.
GT5 Prologue is promising, it's no doubt going to be a feat of presentation and handling, but after spending a few days with Race Driver: Grid, the war is not yet won.
