Super Mario World (Review)
December 20th 2006 06:16
Players: 1-2
Genre: Platform
Developer: Nintendo
Platform: SNES
Year: 1991 (USA), 1992 (PAL)
What's the story this time? Princess Toadstool gets kidnapped by Bowser (again), but this time on Dinosaur Land. Bowser also casts a spell on the land's Yoshis, trapping them in eggs. Mario and Luigi team up with Yoshi (a green dinosaur) to save the princess and save the other Yoshis.
Similar to Super Mario Bros. 3, the game is conducted on a world map where you can choose the stages that you play and replay before entering a side-scrolling mode for play. During this game, you can also ride Yoshis. There are 4 different colours and each has slightly different abilities you can utilise. There are also baby Yoshis, which upon certain criteria, can turn into adult Yoshis of the same colour.
There are a few small changes from the older Mario platformers (besides obvious graphical overhauls) such as the way some blocks operate, as well as the ways enemies can be defeated and the items available.
There's also 2 secret worlds in the game if you're good enough to stumble upon them. They can enable rather large changes to the actual game, including ramping up the difficulty of stages but allowing skilled players to complete the game in only 11 stages. Slightly more minor changes include changing the appearance of enemies.
Overall, it's pretty familiar Mario play, with the Yoshis giving some variance to the age-old formula.
Score: 7.5/10
