Video Game Industry at War!!!!
October 3rd 2010 14:38
Good Morning Gamers,
So this past week I recieved the new issue of Game Informer Magazine (Great Magazine by the way). So this morning I sat down to read an article and this article really touched home with me. So the article talks about how the state of California is trying pass a law that would place a fine on video game retailers that sell violent games to minors.
I have some thoughts on this issue. I think it is really hard to try and pass a law especially when there are very strict rules on this subject. Why do we need a law at all. The industry has the Entertainment Software Association to place ratings on all games deemed violent. The rating system goes from E(everyone) to M(mature).
I believe it is up to the parents to monitor what our children play and what they do not play. If my child asked my for Left 4 Dead and I know the content in that game im not going to by it for them. Retailers now if they see a minor trying to purchase a rated M game they ask for ID or they just do not sell it to them period.
So I ask again why do we need a law? With all these programs in place I believe it has worked so far. The state of California has stated that we have protected children from other forms of media that they believe is harmful to them. Yes I agree we should monitor them on their usage of internet and things they see on the internet, the only problem with this particular law is that it only pertains to video games.
Now what about the Game Developers and makers, they have to make money. The law also states that every game should have some sort of educational value, so that means that every game would have to pass a sort of test. If it does not I mean how would they make money. Game Developers need to sell games to make a profit to pay its employees, so if the game does not sell, people will lose jobs.
So thats my stance on this subject we would like to know yours please leave your comments and tell us what you think.
