Classic gaming made easy on Nintendo Wii

NINTENDO is celebrating the 200th game to hit the Wii Virtual Console library in Australia after the introduction of yet another classic gaming console to its service: the Sega Master System.

Virtual Console is a back catalogue of video games that only 20 years of gaming can deliver. Nintendo invites gamers of all ages to relive classic games, and allows new players to discover iconic favourites including the original Donkey Kong and Mario Bros via Virtual Console.

Easy to access, Virtual Console is available by simply connecting your Wii to the internet. Once connected, from the Wii menu select the Wii Shop Channel and then choose Virtual Console.

Download Virtual Console games with a Wii Points Card, or by purchasing Wii Points on your credit card via your Wii.

Classic games from the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Nintendo 64, Sega Mega Drive, Turbografx, NEOGEO and now Sega Master System are all available on Virtual Console.

This week Gamer Herald relives some of the gaming classics available on the Virtual Console service:

Wave Race 64
Nintendo 64

Wave Race 64

JET SKI games have come and gone in the past, but none have been so influential as Wave Race 64. Released in 1997 as a launch title for the Nintendo 64, it featured accurate water physics that recreated waves at different heights, and details such as the wakes from other riders.

Gamers had to race around a circuit and through sets of bouys to gain speed boosts while doing stunts to gain points in other modes.

Donkey Kong Country
Super Nintendo

Donkey Kong Country SNES

PLATFORM games have never been the same since Donkey Kong Country hit the Super Nintendo in 1994. Developer Rare pushed the graphical limits of the Super Nintendo by using pre-rendered scenery and characters to give the game an almost three-dimensional feel.

Players could team up, playing either Donkey or Diddy Kong, and would work together to recover stolen bananas.

An instant classic that spawned two sequels on the Super Nintendo - both of which are also available on the Virtual Console.

Bomberman '93
Turbgrafx

Bomberman 93

MULTIPLAYER gaming in the 16-bit era was defined by two games - Super Mario Kart, and Bomberman.
Although Bomberman spawned many sequels, the original released on the Turbografx console (not released in Australia, but now available to us via the Virtual Console) in the early 90s saw you control Bomberman around a map, dropping bombs to kill enemies and make your way to an exit.
Its multiplayer mode - in which up to five people could play simultaneously - was frantic fun, and still to his day provides a real 'blast' to gaming nights with friends.

Gunstar Heroes
Sega Mega Drive

Gunstar Heroes

SIDE SCROLLING shooters are a symbol of a bygone era of video gaming in which arcades and shoot'em ups ruled the world.

None were better than Gunstar Heroes on the Sega Mega Drive, which at times became so frantic it would take hours to complete a stage.

The difficulty is typical of games of the 90s, but it's worth downloading to see just how people used to play games. Super Mario Brothers this is not - Gunstar Heroes is a rollercoaster ride that will punish you for every mistake you make - but it will manage to keep you wanting more.
