Microsoft targets Wii buyers with cheaper console
MICROSOFT Australia has dropped the price of its Xbox 360 console packages with the most basic now on sale for $349.
Compared to the Nintendo Wii, previously the cheapest option on the market, the Arcade Xbox 360 package has a retail price $50 cheaper than the Big N's hot selling console.
But, in all honesty, gamers will want to go for the Xbox 360 regular package which represents the best value of the three bundles.
This bundle now sells for $499 and includes a 20GB HDD, the console, HDTV cables, an ethernet cord and a wireless headset.
Microsoft claims the Arcade package allows you to 'hit the ground running' - but you'll be sorely disappointed to think it has everything you need.
A composite AV cable (which will not give you a HD picture), and no HDD (necessary to save demos and patches to) are not worth the $150 you'll save. Go the regular package, or...
There's always the Xbox 360 Elite package, for $649.
It includes a 120GB HDD, a HDMI cable as well as a HDTV component cable, and a 30-day trial to Xbox Live Gold.
The savings make the 360 the most affordable of the true HD consoles, and while the Arcade package makes it cheaper than the Wii, it'll cost you more to actually enjoy it.
The best HD gaming experience is now the most affordable - even cheaper than the Wii. But there are some concessions if you want to save that much money.
